Your Favorite Interface, on All Your Devices: Microsoft’s Continuum Demoed

MicrosoftContinuumMicrosoft is serious when it comes to getting as much out of Windows 10 as possible. The company is now showing off Microsoft Continuum, or the ability to use your smartphone as your desktop computer by adapting its interface on your devices. The company demonstrated this new idea, along with a number of other new features relating to various platforms, on the first day of Microsoft's Build Developer Conference.

During the demo, Microsoft's Joe Belfiore plugged his phone into a monitor, and with a mouse and keyboard, started to use it like a laptop. The idea behind this, and what the audience was supposed to be pondering in their heads is, how cool it would be to have all your Windows devices stay in sync. Could we really just have one gadget for all of our needs? According to Wired, whether it's your VR glasses, a large monitor or TV for a presentation, or a small screen for a video, Microsoft wants this to be the way of the future. It is in fact possible because, remember, Windows 10 applications were made universal.

MicrosoftContinuum1When using his phone via monitor, Belfiore pointed out that the applications he was using, like PowerPoint and Excel, appeared as they would on a Windows 10 computer rather than a smartphone interface. That is because they automatically scale to the appropriate layout for the device you plug it into, “extending from interface changes to input paradigm changes as well” (AnAndTech).

Showing of Continuum doesn't mean it's going to be ready for Windows 10 users just yet. Microsoft is just getting the preview release of 10 out today. However, Belfiore did point out that they plan to run the feature on future devices (which would work as a great selling point), apparently hinting at Lumia smartphones.
