Fuffr iPhone 5s Case Brings Leap Motion-Like Tracking To The Space Around Your Phone

Fuffr1Stockholm company Fuffr wants to “broaden the way people interact with hand held devices”. Fuffr makes iPhone cases that turn the empty space around your phone into a gesture-controlling interface. The company first announced their product during a video demo last month, and continue to reach out to developers by offering free kits to get started.

Your small-screen woes are no longer limiting. Fuffr will transform the area around your smartphone into an extended screen by motion-sensing technology inside of the case. This technology communicates with Bluetooth LE, recognizes multiple hand gestures, greatly enhancing iPhone gaming experiences. A small, clip-on cover instantly turns whatever surface, may it be your coffee table or work desk, into an input device. Sensors are built into the actual case, meaning Fuffr uses only the iPhone during its Bluetooth connection.

FuffrIt is obvious why the “Hello Fuffr” video is surrounded by iPhone gaming. Nothing intensifies phone app gaming more than the limitations of a four-inch screen. The case's sensors work best for something where your finger moves around a lot. This would work especially well for multiplayer concepts . A non-gaming example could be Fuffr allotting you “a larger work area while sketching, surfing Google Maps, or any number of other interaction-heavy activities”. Larger screen size seems to be a popular feature among smartphones today. Yet, Fuffr could support keeping the compact physicality of your phone (especially for those who enjoy smaller devices), with the ability to have it virtually stretch only when needed. Similar to Leap Motion, Fuffr's potential is clear, but that may not convince the world that it's useful. In fact, there is no word on what apps it will support, the amount of power it will use, etc. The Fuffr company website discloses no information regarding cost or release. For now, the only thing being given away is developer kits to interested programmers. The company is also currently hiring for various positions.
