Navigational Smart Wearables Get a Boost with the World’s First Travel Belt

TravelBeltSmart wearables could easily be the fastest growing and most innovative trend in the field of technology. This year alone we’ve seen a Kickstarter for an NFC ring that can unlock devices like your smartphone or computer, and can even double as a house key or ignition switch for your car. Not to mention the bevy of computer and smartphone companies jumping on the smartwatch bandwagon. This week Travel App company Triposo, who aims to make apps that let consumers “travel like a local”, launched a campaign on Indiegogo for a belt that will literally guide you to your destination.

TravelBelt1The Triposo Travel Belt communicates with a companion app through a standard 3.5mm cable plugged into a headphone jack (thus keeping things simple and widely compatible, regardless of a device’s provider). Once you have selected your destination in Triposo’s companion app, you would simply tap the “Buzz me there” option, and the app and belt combo will do the rest. The app pinpoints the wearers current location as well as the direction they are headed in, and will send signals to the belt telling them what direction to take. The belt, equipped with four vibration motors, would then indicate to the wearer with a buzz to one of the motors whether to move forwards, backwards, right or left.

TravelBelt2Researchers and developers at Triposo stated that the idea for the Travel Belt came from a need to look less like a tourist while traveling to new and unfamiliar locales. While the product is still in the early stages and only a prototype of the belt currently exists, if it hits its goal of $10,000 (which is likely considering it has raised nearly $1,000 of that in the campaign’s first day), this could easily be the most inconspicuous wearable smart device on the market. Fixed funding for the world’s first travel belt is set at $50 for the belt alone and $100 for the belt and buckle combo, and Triposo estimates the product to be delivered to consumers as early as February of 2014.
