E17 – XBOX One, NASA Food Printing, Scanadu Tri-corder | Red Headed Geek Show

The unraveling of the anticipated new, Xbox One, streamed live on Tuesday! Running for a little over a half an hour, Microsoft had a great opportunity to finally expose the truth behind the many rumors that have been floating around for months. The hardware was the most important discussion because most of the hype was surrounded by it. For example, specs on the new Xbox One is packed with lots of power and memory, as well as wifi, ethernet and blu ray. More importantly, it was unveiled that it will not be backwards compatible. Second-hand games will not be blocked, and the console does not have to always be online to function.

Next up is a couple of cool things that not only both remind one of Star Trek, but both are being supported by NASA! First is the first food 3D printer, being funded by NASA, and built by a mechanical engineer, who has previously built a chocolate printer. The purpose is to provide food for astronauts on long distance journeys through space. The other invention is by a company called Scanadu, and the device is the Scout. It is like a Star Trek like Tricorder used to scan and monitor your vital signs, temp, ECG and many other important signs. The Scout will provide vital information for people in their own home, without the cost of the doctor visit.

Lastly I could not help but point out something funny. Steven Wilhite, the creator of GIFS from back in 1987, has come out to set the record straight on the pronunciation of the word. After many folks pronouncing it with a “G”, others pronounce with a “J”, like the peanut butter. Accordingly to Wilhite, the correct way to say the word is JIF. Silly, but obviously important enough to be scattered all over social media news!
