Dell Inc. is calling two of its recent products, the Precision M4700 and M6700, "the world’s most powerful 15-inch and 17-inch mobile workstations". Based on a wide array of desirable component options, they may very well be correct.

As pointed out previously in articles about the "Worlds Thinnest Laptop", and the "World's Lightest 14-Inch Laptop", technology superlatives, including world's something-or-other claims to fame, are based in fact more often than not. In the world of computers specifically and Information Technology in general, such claims are just about short-lived enough to live up to Andy Warhol's well known 1968 statement that "In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes."

The more important news may actually be that both workstations can be ordered with the Red Hat Enterprise Linux operating system (RHEL OS version 6 in select regions).

The Precision M6700 and M4700 Dell workstations are targeted at bringing plenty of power to geophysicists doing on-site oil field visualization work, as well as architects, film editors, construction site users, engineers, analysts, scientists, and animators.

Assisting in filling tough field roles, the durable aluminum and magnesium alloy chassis meets tough military standards and is MIL-STD 810G tested, while offering exceptional battery life. Dell states the Precision M4700 and M6700 are made to withstand shock, humidity, vibration, high altitudes, dust, and high temperatures.

Utilizing a good selection of professional graphics options including the NVIDIA Quadro K-series GPUs and AMD FirePro graphics, Dell says the M6700 is also "the first and only workstation to offer AMD FirePro M6000 with PCIe x16 Gen 3" for faster data throughput. As expected, both workstations offer the latest Intel Core i5, i7, and Extreme Edition processors with Turbo Boost.

As with all other Dell Precision workstations, the M4700 and M6700 are ISV certified for compatibility with top professional software applications. Both the Dell Precision M6700 and M4700 feature quiet dual fans and additional cooling solutions for both the GPUs and CPUs, as well as an ejectable drive caddy for those working with very large data-sets, or highly sensitive data, and a need to frequently swap drives. With that much capability expect a starting weight of 6.13 lbs for the M4700 and 7.76 lbs for the M6700.

The Dell Precision M4700 and M6700 can simultaneously power as many as three displays when not docked, and up to five displays when docked. Both Precision workstations are compatible with the Latitude E-family dock.

As far as specifications and pricing are concerned, the incredible array of options and components combinations could easily number in the hundreds or thousands, making a thorough check of the Dell website mandatory in order to customize for a specific usage scenario.
