Dell Inspiron 15 M5040 (P18F001) Motherboard Removal & Installation

  • 1 x small phillips head screwdriver
  • 1 x small flat head screwdriver
  • 1 x plastic scribe (optional)

Installation and Removal Instructions
Inspiron 15 M5040 (P18F001) Motherboard

Slide the locking latch over.

Step 1

  • Slide the locking latch over.
  • Slide the battery latch to the left and the Battery out.

Remove the 2 hard drive screws.

Step 2

  • Remove the 2 hard drive screws.
  • Under the battery, remove the hinge cover screw.
Remove the 2 hard drive screws.Under the battery, remove the hinge cover screw.
Remove the 11 bottom palmrest screws.

Step 3

  • Remove the 11 bottom palmrest screws.
Turn the laptop over and open it up.

Step 4

  • Turn the laptop over and open it up.
  • Press in the 4 keyboard clips to loosen the Keyboard.
Carefully lift the keyboard and turn it over.

Step 5

  • Carefully lift the keyboard and turn it over.
  • Unplug the keyboard cable.
Unplug the wireless antenna cables.

Step 6

  • Unplug the wireless antenna cables.
  • Remove the retaining screw and lift the wireless card out of the slot.

Separate the memory clips until the memory pivots up.

Step 7

  • Separate the memory clips until the memory pivots up.
  • Remove the Memory.
  • Repeat the process for the second memory clip.

Loosen the 2 top palmrest screws. You will not be able to remove them completely.

Step 8

  • Loosen the 2 top palmrest screws. You will not be able to remove them completely.
Unplug the 2 palmrest cables.

Step 9

  • Unplug the 2 palmrest cables.
  • Carefully unsnap and lift off the palmrest.
Slide the hard drive to the right and lift it out of the laptop.

Step 10

  • Slide the hard drive to the right and lift it out of the laptop.
Remove the optical drive screw.

Step 11

  • Remove the optical drive screw.
  • Slide the Optical Drive out to the right.
Remove the optical drive screw.Slide the Optical Drive out to the right.
Unplug the fan cable.

Step 12

Unplug the fan cable.Unplug the LCD Cable.
Loosen the 4 heatsink screws.

Step 13

  • Loosen the 4 heatsink screws.
  • Carefully lift the Heatsink Fan off of the motherboard.
Turn the CPU Locking screw counterclockwise approximately 180 degrees, or until the CPU is loose.

Step 14

  • Turn the CPU Locking screw counterclockwise approximately 180 degrees, or until the CPU is loose.
  • Remove the CPU Processor.
Installation note 1: Make sure to replace thermal compound or thermal pads on the CPU and heatsink.

Step 15

  • Installation note 1: Make sure to replace thermal compound or thermal pads on the CPU and heatsink.
  • Installation note 2: Tighten the heatsink screws in the order listed on the heatsink.
Unplug the DC jack cable.

Step 16

  • Unplug the DC jack cable.
Loosen the wireless antenna cables and move them out of the way.

Step 17

  • Loosen the wireless antenna cables and move them out of the way.
Unplug the cables at the bottom of the motherboard.

Step 18

  • Unplug the cables at the bottom of the motherboard.
Remove the 2 motherboard screws.

Step 19

  • Remove the 2 motherboard screws.
  • Remove the Motherboard.
