Acer Switch 7 Black Edition Review, Liquid-Cooled, Powerful Tablet Packs Discrete Graphics and Stylus

After taking a look at the Swift 5, I began wondering about Acer’s Switch 7 2-in-1 tablet. As boastful as it sounds, Acer says this is the very first fan-less, liquid-cooled, 2-in-1 notebook in the world. Powered with Intel’s 8th Generation Core i7 processor, and Nvidia GeForce discrete graphics, the only thing that stands out as unfortunate is its high price. With a precise, sculpted look, a kickstand that is thinner and stronger than ever, this device has had quite the anticipated release.

Acer wanted to update its Switch 7 into a racier, edgier, and built-darn-well type of machine. Dubbed as the Switch 7 Black Edition, the company updated quite a few features, inside and out. Externally, Acer sure seems proud of this “Black Edition”. The color black, for one, is a timeless and stylish pick, especially when you’re wanting to make things appear premium. Duly noted, this machine is premium, as its sculpted aluminum body was built using, in Acer’s words, “microfabrication” for a more engineered appearance. The kickstand, which allows the tablet transform into a laptop, is anything but flimsy, something you see with the dime-a-dozen tablet hybrids out there. Instead, Acer utilized the aid of stainless steel, and with that, the entirety of the Switch 7 is completely strong.

But, it’s thin, too! The detachable Acer AutoStand, as it’s called, is not only thinner than ever thanks to that stainless steel, but it can be auto-deployed and auto-retracted. Incredibly versatile, the device promotes single-handed operation, and weighs just 2.5 pounds with the keyboard attached. Speaking of, the keyboard cover features backlit keys, and a fingerprint sensor that accompanies Windows Hello via (pre-installed) Windows 10 Home. The large 13.5-inch IPS screen holds 2256 x 1504 pixels, wide viewing angles, pen and touch input, and an embedded stylus with a pressure sensitivity of 4,096 levels (that’s nearly twice the 2,048 levels Dell’s Active Pen has in its XPS 13 9365 2-in-1).

Yes, Intel’s 8th Gen CPU processor, the Core i7-8850U quad-core chip, fits nicely here, and with the help of Nvidia’s GeForce MX150 graphics, things are going to run smooth like butter, quite ideal for intensive tasks, media streaming, and creating content. It comes with 16G of RAM, a 512GB SSD, and the battery should run for up to 10 hours, all while remaining completely silent with that fancy liquid cooling.

How can a fan-less design, high-res LCD screen, and a semi-compact design weigh just 2 and-a-half pounds? Acer designed the Switch 7 Black Edition with mobility in mind. The tech company really wanted a tablet 2-in-1 to make a mark in the industry, and in order to do that, they proved improvements can be made in usability and strength, especially regarding a machine that has a kickstand. It appears they did a good job utilizing specific engineering for a more intuitive ease-of-use. Acer’s pricing is high, meaning $1,699 high, and although sources hinted at a 2018 release, the official press release revealed it’s December availability.
