The Latest ROG Laptop From Asus Nails the Gaming Trifecta

AsusRogG701ViGamingLaptop1It’s no secret that when it comes to gaming, no matter how souped-up your laptop is, it doesn’t provide quite the same experience as your desktop PC. There simply isn’t room for the multitude of components that high-level gaming requires in a portable device – at least not in their current iteration. But this year, a couple of laptops have nearly bridged that gap. The latest from Asus comes about as close to the mark as anything else on the market right now, and even manages to include a world-first for gaming laptops. The ROG G701VI is the first portable system to feature a wide-viewing angle G-Sync panel, meaning it will offer blazing-fast frame rates, stunning visuals, and none of the dreaded lag time. Because as any dedicated gamer can attest, a good rig needs to boast top-shelf specs in more than one area to offer a truly immersive gaming experience. It needs the holy trinity of gaming rig configurations – a fast processor, a powerful graphics card, and an exceptional display.

AsusRogG701ViGamingLaptopThe trifecta of gaming rig perfection has been notoriously difficult to achieve in the mobile space, which is what makes the ROG G701VI such a steal; even starting at $3,099. It features an unlocked and factory overclocked Intel Core i7-6820HK series processor alongside NVIDIA’s current flagship mobile GPU, the GeForce GTX 1080. Fast processor and powerful graphics card – check, check. Where Asus really shot for the stars though was in the display design. The panel is a 17.3-inch Full HD screen (1920 x 1080 resolution) and the first mobile IPS panel to offer a 120Hz refresh rate, thanks to NVIDIA’s G-Sync technology. All combined, this rig should provide some of the smoothest, stutter-free gaming of any mobile device on the market right now. Meaning for gamers looking to take their power-hungry, bleeding-edge games on the go, there may finally be an ideal option for that.

AsusRogG701ViGamingLaptop2For those of you asking “why not a 4K display?” - all I can say is, “you can’t always get what you want.” You can, however, output to a 4K monitor if you so desire – crisis averted. Asus’s latest gaming laptop is packed chock-full of everything else you could possibly desire, and is surprisingly compact for the amount of power it houses. It features a built-in subwoofer and speakers as well as an ESS Sabre DAC and amplifier to really maximize those gaming headphones. On-board you’ll also find dual-band 2x2 802.11ac Wi-Fi, as well as a pair of USB 3.1 Type-C ports (one of which supports Thunderbolt 3), three USB 3.0 ports, an Ethernet connector, HDMI port, and Mini DisplayPort. The base configuration comes with 32GB of RAM and a single 512GB NVMe PCi-e SSD, or you could pay a little more and spring for 64GB of RAM and a pair of SSDs in RAID 0 configuration (aside from that single difference, both models are otherwise identical). Asus even claims that the ROG G701VI is already optimized for VR use.

While it boasts a pretty mighty price tag, this may be the most portable rig you can get without sacrificing any gaming power. At just 34mm thick and well under four pounds, it is primed to take the throne as the best option on the market for taking your gaming on-the-go.
