If you find yourself wondering why anyone could possibly need a 17-inch, 2-in-1 convertible laptop, you’re not alone. The 15-inch hybrid models are already a bit large for a device whose focus is on ease of portability, so a 17-inch version seems excessive to say the least. At that point, why not just spring for a lightweight laptop with all the bells and whistles? Dell announced their new Inspiron 7000 line at Computex in Taiwan last month, and the highlight of their presentation was undoubtedly the introduction of what Dell claims to be “the world’s first 17-inch of its kind”. The behemoth hybrid sports a 17.3-inch full HD touchscreen and has plenty of room to house all the niceties of a full-blown laptop, such as a full-sized, backlit keyboard and number keypad. There are ports galore – a 17-inch slab allows ample room for a USB Type-C, USB 3.0, USB 2.0, and the standard HDMI and SD card slots. Under the hood you’ll find a sixth-generation Intel Core i5 processor, up to 12GB of RAM, Nvidia GeForce 940MX graphics with 2GB of GDDR5 RAM, and up to 1TB of hard drive storage. It even comes with an infrared camera for Windows Hello’s facial recognition login feature. And as with most 2-in-1 devices, the 17-inch Inspiron 7000 features a 360-degree hinge to allow users to easily shift from laptop to tent mode.
For the majority of casual 2-in-1 users that simply enjoy the portability they offer, 17 inches may end up being a dealbreaker. It could, however, be the ideal middle ground for creative professionals who desire more screen real estate with which to doodle and build. In fact, Dell even features it running what appears to be a DJ program on their website. While it will not likely be the next iPad in terms of popularity, only a fool would discard the possibility for success in some of technology’s fastest growing niche markets. Plus, while the rest of the PC seems to be experiencing a decline in PC sales, Executive Director Marty Wong says Dell has seen 13 consecutive quarters of increasing PC market share. Back in Q1 of this year, they surpassed HP as the number one PC brand in the U.S., in large part because of their innovative line of 2-in-1’s and powerful gaming PCs.
