HP must have been hitting it hard this past year (or however long it takes to build beautiful devices), because now, within days of announcing the slimmest laptop in the world, the Spectre 13.3, the tech giant has announced a range of new Envy laptops. Rather than being less exciting news than the Spectre, I’d say the updated Envy and Envy x360 laptops are fantastic news for regular folks like you and I, who would love having a new laptop, but require something more in the mid-range price bracket.
What we’ve got here is the new Envy x360 convertible laptop, and two new Envy clamshell models. Now, I won’t be comparing the these devices to the Spectre too much, but for the record, they all offer great horsepower at more affordable prices. They are of course thicker than the Spectre, but they happen to be lighter and thinner than all of their own predecessors.
First is the Envy x360 convertible, which at 4.5 pounds and .74 inches this time around, looks a lot like the previous version from 2015, but is 21 percent thinner. This will feature a 15.6-inch display, with a (mediocre) 1080p, and rotating hinge for 360 degrees of freedom. Internally, you get to choose either the Intel Core i5 or Core i7 Skylake processors, the option of Intel Iris graphics, or AMD’s seventh generation mobile processor. The AMD FX 9800P with Radeon R7 “features advanced video, high-end graphics, and security features for a laptop that combines both productivity and entertainment features”, as stated by Venture Beat. The x360 will come configured with up to 16GB of RAM, up to 2TB of HDD storage, and up to a 256GB SSD. Prices for the HP x360 convertible begin at $680 (Engadget).
The other devices include the Envy 15.6 and Envy 17.3 clamshell options, which despite the lack of hinge, look a lot like the x360. The 15.6-inch Envy measures .7 inches thick, weighs 4.4 pounds, while the 17.3-inch Envy measures nearly 1 inch thick, and weighs 6.6 pounds (making both models thinner than their predecessors). Both displays measure in at 1080p with touchscreen options, feature Windows Hello facial recognition, and HP’s Fast Charging Technology, for juicing up the battery power 90% in just 90 minutes (while the machine is turned off). The only differences you will really find involve the 15.6-incher’s Intel Iris graphics, while the larger model will provide you with NVIDIA’s GeForce 940MX GPU. Both are available with up to a 1TB HDD, but the 15.6-inch model has a slightly smaller SSD of 256GB, while the 17.3-inch model has a larger SSD at 512GB. Prices for the clamshells range from $780 to $1,030, for the 15.6 inch and 17.3 inch models, respectively.
