Microsoft’s Brand New Surface Book Is Not Just Another Hybrid Laptop

MicrosoftSurfaceBookIf I were a laptop, and there was one laptop I would try to live up to, it would be the Apple MacBook. Laptop “envy” is what it’s called, actually, and I’m not the only one who has it. Most companies strive to compete with the top selling MacBooks. In its sleekness, lightness, and good internal hardware, it is pretty much the perfect device, but only if you are an Apple OS person. If you desire the same features the MacBook laptops possess, yet are on the other end of the spectrum and enjoy Microsoft instead, boy do I have good news for you. Microsoft has been doing pretty darn well with its Surface Pro line of 2-in-1’s and notebooks, but now has borrowed some ideas from its Apple counterpart to create its latest Surface Book.

First unveiled earlier this month, Microsoft’s Surface Book series is not just another hybrid laptop line, but just happens to be Microsoft’s very first laptop ever. If you’re thinking, “What about the Surface Pro line?”, you’ve gotta remember, those are actually tablets that come with keyboards. But, that’s not the only reason why this machine has been so highly anticipated for the last few weeks. The Surface Book is supposed to be a very high-end, very powerful luxury laptop.

MicrosoftSurfaceBook1Now, the Surface Books come in multiple models, the highest-end being a $3,000 Intel Core i7 model packed with 1TB of onboard storage. Seeing as how most of us wouldn’t throw down 3 grand for a laptop, I’ll enlighten you with the specs included in decently-priced models. Starting with resolution, the 13.5-inch laptop/tablet hybrid features a 3,000 x 2,000 PixelSense display with a 3:2 aspect ratio, weighing in at 3.5 pounds (1.6 pounds of that is from the detachable display) (Engadget). This is about as heavy as the MacBook Pro. Also, this thing is absolutely gorgeous to the eye, as well as touch, and it may remind you a lot of a MacBook in its silver magnesium chassis.

But don’t get disappointed if this laptop is turning out to be a bit heftier than you hoped. The Surface Book is being touted as “twice as powerful as the MacBook Pro”, running a sixth-gen Core CPU, NVIDIA GeForce 940M GPU, supporting up to 16GB of RAM, and all the way up to 1TB of storage. That’s a lot to offer for something that weighs just 3.5 pounds.

There’s a lot of good technology going on here. I’d be surprised if the Surface Book didn’t turn out to be one of the most popular new 2-in-1’s on the market. One determining factor, however, is whether or not people can afford it. Competitively pricing this thing is important, and it looks like its $1,499 starting price proves this thing is blatantly higher-end (Apple starts its MacBooks out around $1,000). The base model, at that $1,499 price, is a sixth-gen Intel Core i5 processor, 128GB SSD, 8GB of RAM, with 12 whole hours of battery life (BGR). Just as the MacBooks can go all the way up to $3,000, there’s nothing odd about Microsoft offering the same thing. Considering the moderately impressive GPU, processing power and amazing display, you’re getting what you pay for with the Surface Book.
