Dell’s XPS 13 has been widely regarded as a consumer favorite among Windows laptops. It boasts an elegant yet functional design, high performance ratings and a vivid edge-to-edge display the likes of which had not been seen in a laptop of its size before. While it seems the majority of laptop users now prefer a 13-inch model for its ease of portability, there is still a large market for those of us who want, nay – need that extra display screen real estate. So it came as no surprise when Dell announced the newest member of their XPS line last week, a 15-inch laptop equipped with Intel’s latest Skylake processors and a beautiful infinity edge display. For the first time, the tech giant seems primed and ready to take on their biggest competition – Apple’s MacBook Pro.
In addition to a spectacular infinity edge display, which leaves only a half-inch bezel around the screen, Dell has also dropped the base price of this creative dream machine down to only $999. Now before you get too excited, note the key word there – base price. As you can probably guess, there is a pretty wide gap in specs between the base model and a tricked-out XPS 15. All models will come with the infinity display and the same machined aluminum lid atop a carbon fiber deck that we’ve come to expect from the XPS line, but the similarities between tiers pretty much stop there. The base model is still nothing to sneeze at, with a 14 x 9.3-inch footprint and weighing in at less than 4 pounds, Dell claims it is the world’s smallest 15-inch laptop and the lightest “performance-class” machine of its size. It comes standard with a Core i3 processor, 500GB hard drive, integrated graphics and a 1080p non-touch display screen. And, like the rest of the product line, comes equipped with a USB-C port with full Thunderbolt 3.0 support. If you’re still having trouble deciding which upgrades would make this your ideal traveling, computing partner in productivity, the 17 hour battery life offered by the base model may be enough to sway you to forego a few extra bells and whistles.
Now, if bells and whistles are your bread and butter, then Dell is offering those in spades too. The XPS 15 can be configured with up to a sixth-generation Core i7 CPU, an Nvidia GeForce FTX 960M GPU with 2GB of GDDR5, and either a 1TB hard drive or 1TB PCIe SSD. The display at its best offers a color-accurate 4K screen which can achieve 100 percent minimum Adobe RGB, meaning that bright colors really pop on screen and bad viewing angles virtually don’t exist (note that the 4K screen drops that promised battery life down to only about 11 hours). According to Dell the higher-specced models, while sacrificing some battery life, offer a machine that is intended to help creative pros get stuff done. And if even the base model XPS 15 is slightly more than you happen to need, Dell has also given their XPS 13 modest refresh in the form of a better processor and bigger battery. The XPS 13 now starts at just $799, and like its big brother the XPS 15, is available for purchase today.
