Samsung Launches Milk VR to Deliver Content for Gear VR

MilkVrSamsung made a bold move by releasing its virtual reality headset, Gear VR. Heck, it had to when competitors like Sony's Project Morpheus and Google Cardboard threw themselves into the mix. The new headset, priced at $200, could officially be purchased through Samsung's online store and AT&T online since early December. But what's one of the biggest problems about VR headsets at launch? Don't worry, I'll tell you. Its the general lack of stuff to do, says Gizmodo.

MilkVr1Samsung wants to avoid the boredom by launching an online portal, Milk VR, a free video streaming service designed to fulfill Gear VR's need for content. Think of it as a YouTube of VR, categorized into “Trending”, “Action”, “Planet VR”, “Music”, “Sports”, and “VR Life”. More content is expected to trickle in on a consistent basis, as the company wants it to become a “daily habit” for its customers.

Samsung is striving for only high quality videos from registered partners on the portal. Accepted video must be 1-10 minute videos in full 360-degrees, says Cnet. It will “serve as a model for future filmmakers or artists looking to take advantage of the virtual reality medium, as well as build up an ecosystem and viewership for VR content”, says Cnet. Milk VR should be addicting, just as YouTube has its own ecosystem where users come back to see content from a variety of personalities.

MilkVr2Its wide range of content will be offered through downloads and “adaptive streaming options”. The app itself can be downloaded from Gear VR's home screen. A full rundown of submission specs can be found on Milk VR's website, where Samsung offers some suggestions for creating a Milk VR-ready video clip (PC Mag). However, rumors of a new camera system, Project Beyond, has been sneak peeked by the company. Whether or not Samsung releases it, it sure looks perfect for creating content just for the Milk VR portal.
