Dell Inspiron 6400 E1505 Motherboard Removal and Installation

Installation and Removal Instructions
Dell Inspiron 6400 / E1505 Motherboard

On the bottom of the laptop, slide the battery latch to the right and lift the battery out.

Step 1

  • On the bottom of the laptop, slide the battery latch to the right and lift the battery out.
Loosen the 2 memory door screws and lift the door off of the base.

Step 2

  • Loosen the 2 memory door screws and lift the door off of the base.
Lift the memory out of the memory slot.

Step 3

  • Separate the retaining memory clips until the memory pivots up to a 45 degree angle.
  • Lift the memory out of the memory slot.
Slide the hard drive out of the laptop.

Step 4

  • Remove the (2) 3mm x 3mm hard drive screws.
  • Slide the hard drive out of the laptop.
Slide the hard drive out of the laptop. Remove the (2) 3mm x 3mm hard drive screws.
Using a screw driver slide the optical drive out of the laptop.

Step 5

  • Remove the 2.5mm x 8mm screw.
  • Using a screw driver slide the optical drive out of the laptop.
Using a screw driver slide the optical drive out of the laptop. Remove the 2.5mm x 8mm screw.
On the back of the laptop remove the (2) 2.5mm x 8mm Hinge screws.

Step 6

  • On the bottom of the laptop remove the (13) 2.5mm x 8mm bottom base screws.
  • On the back of the laptop remove the (2) 2.5mm x 8mm Hinge screws.
On the back of the laptop remove the (2) 2.5mm x 8mm Hinge screws. On the bottom of the laptop remove the (13) 2.5mm x 8mm bottom base screws.
On the right side of the power button, place a flat head screw driver into the slot and carefully pry up the power button cover.

Step 7

  • Open the laptop display as far as possible.
  • On the right side of the power button, place a flat head screw driver into the slot and carefully pry up the power button cover.
Carefully lift the keyboard up and place it onto the LCD screen to reveal the keyboard cable connection.

Step 8

  • Remove the (2) 2.5mm x 5mm screws.
  • Carefully lift the keyboard up and place it onto the LCD screen to reveal the keyboard cable connection.
Pivot the keyboard cable latch up and remove the cable.

Step 9

  • Pivot the keyboard cable latch up and remove the cable.
Unplug the wireless antenna cables.

Step 10

  • Unplug the wireless antenna cables.
Unplug the LCD cable.

Step 11

  • Loosen the LCD cable ground screw.
  • Unplug the LCD cable.
Unplug the LCD cable. Loosen the LCD cable ground screw.
Remove the (2) 2.5mm x 5mm hinge screws.

Step 12

  • Loosen the LCD cable and antenna wires from the routing channels.
  • Remove the (2) 2.5mm x 5mm hinge screws.
  • Lift the display assembly from the laptop base.
Remove the (2) 2.5mm x 5mm hinge screws. Lift the display assembly from the laptop base.
Unplug the touch pad cable and the stand by switch.

Step 13

  • Loosen the palm rest captive screw. It is attached to the palm rest so you will not be able to fully remove it.
  • Unplug the touch pad cable and the stand by switch.
  • Carefully unsnap the palm rest from the laptop base.
Unplug the touch pad cable and the stand by switch. Carefully unsnap the palm rest from the laptop base.
Carefully lift the heat sink away from the motherboard.

Step 14

  • Loosen the 4 heat sink screws.
  • Carefully lift the heat sink away from the motherboard.
Lift the CPU out of the CPU socket.

Step 15

  • Turn the CPU locking screw approximately 180 degrees, counterclockwise.
  • Lift the CPU out of the CPU socket.
Lift the express card slot assembly away from the motherboard.

Step 16

  • Remove the (6) 2.5mm x 5mm screws.
  • Lift the express card slot assembly away from the motherboard.
Remove the (2) 2.5mm x 5mm fan screws.

Step 17

  • Unplug the fan cable.
  • Remove the (2) 2.5mm x 5mm fan screws.
  • Remove the fan from the base.
Remove the (2) 2.5mm x 5mm fan screws. Remove the fan from the base.
Remove the display port screws.

Step 18

  • Remove the display port screws.
Unplug the speaker cable.

Step 19

  • Unplug the speaker cable.
Remove the motherboard from the base assembly.

Step 20

  • Remove the (3) 2.5mm x 5mm motherboard screws.
  • Remove the motherboard from the base assembly.
